HOMELESSNESS SERVICES

Toora Homelessness Service is ACT’s largest specialist homelessness support service for women and children who are homeless or are at risk of homelessness for a variety of reasons such as mental health, alcohol and drug issues, domestic violence, financial difficulties and trauma.

Our Homelessness Service runs various programs to offer crisis and transitional accommodation, individual case management and practical support for single women and women with accompanying children and other families in a safe environment.

All our programs operate in a safe, supportive and child-safe environment in shared and standalone properties where race, culture and other differences are respected and valued.

In line with Toora’s Practice Framework, we use strengthsbased, person-centred case management plan that is underpinned by trauma informed care. We work with women to increase their independent living skills, support them to reintegrate into their community and to help them build their resilience.

Our specialist staff provide case management and tenancy support to find and maintain appropriate long-term housing and assist with personal goals or education and training.

Our homelessness service has a Child and Family Specialist who works very closely with the family to design a holistic case plan that will support the children’s wellbeing by supporting their parent/carer’s wellbeing.

We are aware that children at our service may have suffered from multiple forms of harm and we acknowledge that many children are victims of complex trauma. Our Child and Family Specialist supports our women and their children by:

  • Providing appropriate referrals, advocacy and liaising with different community organisations to help children and families
  • Helping to improve living skills and routine for the family
  • Providing parenting classes
  • Providing playgroups for children
  • Providing information and education to parents
